‘Dancing With the Stars’ once again a success

Over the weekend, three Crowley charities presented the second annual Dancing With the Stars in a Caring and it was a rousing success.
The event’s top honors were awarded to Jude Sittig and Nancy Broadhurst, who raised the most money, and their choreographer Sydni Hart. The couple closed the show with a dance to the toe-tapping popular song “Happy” by Pharrell. The number also featured a cameo performance by the Israelite Baptist Choir at the end.
“We just want to thank everyone involved,” said Mary Zaunbrecher, event co-chair, “especially our sponsors and the casts from 2013 and 2014 and of course Brenda Core, the choreography chairperson.”
Core was a busy person Friday and Saturday nights with not only overseeing the choreography and stage production of the event, but also providing choreography to the couple voted as fan favorites, April Mixon and Henry Helo III. Mixon and Helo’s performance took on “The Great Gatsby” not only in look but in song as will.i.am’s “Bang Bang” from the soundtrack was the music.
Core also was part of the opening number which featured several choreographers and several more returning dancers from 2013’s cast performing to a Brittanie Scroggs’ choreographed number to Fatboy Slim’s “The Rockafeller Skank.”
Other couples danced to a variety of music types from different eras.
While Friday night’s “rehearsal” performance and Saturday’s main event were designed to feature 11 choreographed dances, what spectators saw was much more than 11 dance routines. There were cameos and props that turned each performance into a mini-skit of sorts to the entertainment of all watching.
The goal of the production was to raise money for three worthy causes in the Crowley area – the Crowley Christian Care Center, the Community Outreach Corporation and the Rotary Club of Crowley. These three entities help those in need with food, clothing, utilities, shelter and various community projects.
“The generosity for the needy in our community was overwhelming,” said Zaunbrecher.
So overwhelming that the event raised $175,000.
