RAYNE - During Thursday’s monthly meeting of the local Woodmen of the World Chapter, a solemn ceremony was held at the Legion Home in observance of the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks of 2001.
The “Honor and Remembrance” ceremony was spearheaded by WOW President Robert Comeaux, assisted by members of the local WOW lodge and legionnaires of Arceneaux Post 77 of the American Legion.
The invocation was offered by Deacon Denis LaCroix of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
During Comeaux’s welcome, introduced were Mayor Chuck Robichaux, along with members of the City Council, local firemen, police officers and first responders.
In keeping with the program, Comeaux commented of the 2001 attacks on the United States, noting, “Everyone remembers where you were and what we were doing at that very moment when our country was attacked; when thousands of innocent citizens and brave firefighters, emergency responders and police officers lost their lives in the terrorist attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. Hundreds of heroes materialized during and after those attacks, and it is to them, and to those fighting to strengthen our freedom, that we dedicate this ceremony.”
With that said, Comeaux presented U.S. Flags to the Rayne Volunteer Fire Department and the Rayne Police Department, represented by Fire Chief Allen “Noochie” Credeur and Police Lt. Ryan Charles.
Since 2002, Woodmen of the World chapters across the country have been dedicating flagpoles and presenting flags, not only to honor the heroes and victims of September 11, 2001, but also the men and women of our Armed Forces serving in combat. In addition, the ceremonies pay tribute to the men and women in this community who risk their lives daily to keep it safe -- police officers, fire fighters and emergency rescue personnel and other first responders -- they all deserve the community’s thanks and admiration. Over 5,000 flagpoles have been dedicated in special ceremonies held by Woodmen of the World chapters.
Commander David Simon of Arceneaux Post 77, American Legion, presented the Colors, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Fire Chief Credeur spoke on behalf of the Rayne Volunteer Fire Department, stating how proud he is to live, work and volunteer in his homwtown, Rayne. “It’s not big, it’s not rich, but I love our city. We are always there for our city, and they are always there for us.”
Comeaux then thanked everyone for their attendance and invited all to enjoy a delicious meal.
