Notre Dame holds commencement for 2010 class

CHURCH POINT- With hosts of family and friends in attendance 102 young men and women who graduated from Notre Dame High School of Acadia Parish on Friday, May 21. The graduates began their honored day with an 8:30 a.m. Mass in Our Lady of the Sacred Haert Church in Church Point. Fr. Byron Miller, executive director of the National Seelos Shrine and the Seelos Center in New Orleans and Notre Dame graduate was the main celebrant. Concelebrating were Fr. Gary Schexnayder, NDHS chancellor and pastor of St. Michael Church in Crowley; Msgr. Jeff DeBlanc, vicar for the west region of the Diocese of Lafayette and pastor of St. Joseph Church in Rayne; Fr. Matthew Higginbotham, pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Crowley; Fr. Kevin Bordelon, pastor of St. Leo IV Church in Church Point; Fr. Bill Ruskoski, pastor of St. Joseph Church in Rayne; Fr. Charles McMillan, pastor Or Lady Help of Christians in Jennings; Fr. Blaine Clement, pastor of St. Joseph Church in Evangeline; Fr. Thomas Habetz, associate pastor of St. Genevieve Church in Lafayette; Fr. James Brady, associate pastor of St .Michael Church in Crowley, and Fr. Clint Trahan, associate pastor of St. Joseph Church in Rayne.

At 7 p.m. the graduates came together for the final time at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church for commencement exercises. Four students, Alexandra Elaine Boulet, Hannah Claire Godeaux, Ryan Jude Leonards, Caroline Ann Stewart graduated Summa cum laude. Ryan Leonards delivered the valedictory address penned by the honor graduates.

The Catholic Action Awards, Notre Dame’s most prestigious awards, were presented to the outdstaning boy and girl displaying qualities of leadership, service to community and church, and Chrsitian attitude toward all they meet. The recipients, voted on by theiir classmates, are Ryan Jude Leonards, son of Jeff and Debra Leonards of Branch and Leah Marie Lapoint, daughter of Daniel and Sonja Lapoint of Church Point.

On behalf of the Seelos Center, Fr. Byron Miller presented a statue of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos, to his alma mater. The statue will be displayed in Our Lady Seta of Wisdom Chapel on the Notre Dame campus.
