Brandon Faulk show to open at The Gallery Saturday night

Local artist Brandon Faulk is a hard man to pin down, but this Saturday night those who attend the opening of his new show at The Gallery in Crowley will have a chance to try doing just that.

Faulk is self-professedly “bad at naming things,” so the show currently remains unbranded, but guests can expect to see paintings of a wide variety of subjects, most of them presented in a surreal aspect.

The artist, who hails from Indian Bayou and works mainly in acrylics, has been painting for about 17 years.  Asked to describe his art, Faulk says that he never thinks about what his paintings mean and admits that his work is a mystery to him.

As he looks at his work hanging on the walls of The Gallery, he comments on things he would do differently with some of the paintings if he were starting them now. This is because, according to Faulk, who paints everyday —sometimes up to 16 hours a day — he learns something new with every painting.  He notes that the only  time he ever really stops working on a painting is when it is sold.

Viewers of Faulk’s show should plan to spend more than a few minutes contemplating his art, as there are approximately 50 works on display. And, in most of his paintings, there are plenty of details that shouldn’t be missed.

Faulk works mainly with acrylics and uses vibrant colors plentifully. He says that he paints because “it makes him happy,” but what he means is that it’s as essential to his life as eating or breathing.

The show will also include a little lagniappe in the form of live blues played by Faulk’s band, Mojo Black, which includes Sammie Reggie, Ricky Hebert and Benny Amos.

The gala, which begins at 6 p.m. and lasts until 8 p.m., is free and open to the public.

The Gallery is located at 222 N. Parkerson Ave. in Crowley. For more information call 783-3747.
