LPB plans programming to commemorate D-Day

It was the largest amphibious attack in world history as thousands of Allied troops and aircraft attacked the coast of Normandy on June 6, 1944. On the 70th anniversary of this momentous event, Louisiana Public Broadcasting and PBS will air a number of programs between now and Wednesday, June 4, to spotlight some of the heroes who took part in the assault.

• NOVA “D-Day’s Sunken Treasures” (Wednesday, May 28, at 9 p.m.) travels back to Normandy to search through the sunken ships, landing craft and planes that were lost off the coast of France.

• “Eagles of Mercy” (Wednesday, June 4, at 9 p.m.) tells the story of two U.S. medics who parachuted into France during the invasion to treat the wounded.

• “Dick Winters: ‘Hang Tough’” (Wednesday, June 4, at 10 p.m.) profiles Major Richard D. Winters, the combat leader of the Band of Brothers.

• “A Company of Heroes” (Wednesday, June 4, at 11 p.m.) interviews survivors from Easy Company about their exploits during World War II.
