Native American Day set for Sept. 20 at Vermilionville

The Bayou Vermilion District’s Vermilionville has invited the public to celebrate its annual Native American Culture Day on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its historic village.

Representatives from many of Louisiana’s Native American tribes will be on hand throughout the village to celebrate their living cultures through craft demonstrations, food, music, dance and cultural exchange.

This year’s Native American Culture Day will focus on “Females in Folklore,” and the activities planned for the day will include artifact exhibits, pottery, beading, basket weaving, palmetto weaving, garfish jewelry, dream catchers, film showings, boat tours, canoeing, artifact exhibits, tomahawk throwing, drumming, dancing and more. Activities for children will include face painting, talking sticks, medicine pouches and Eyes of God. There will also be palmetto thatching for the Native American Common Ground, the new ceremonial site for all tribes, to be completed during Native American Culture Day.

Native American Culture Day is supported by an External Agencies Funding Program grant, sponsored by Lafayette Consolidated Government and administered by the Acadiana Center for the Arts. Additional support comes from Party Central.

Vermilioville is located at 300 Fisher Road in Lafayette. For more information visit http://www.vermilionville.org/vermilionville/index.html.
