New ‘Monday Night at the Movies’ lineup announced

The Acadia Parish Library in Crowley has announced its new “Monday Night at the Movies” schedule, which includes a great line-up:

Jan. 26: “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” (1962), 123 minutes, B/W, western. A senator (James Stewart) who became famous for killing a notorious outlaw (Lee Marvin) returns for the funeral of an old friend (John Wayne) and tells the truth about his deed.

Feb. 2: “Edge of Darkness” (1943), 119 minutes, B/W, World War II drama. After two years under German rule, a small Norwegian fishing village rises up and revolts against the occupying Nazis. Starring Errol Flynn and Walter Huston.

Feb. 9: “State Fair” (1945), 100 minutes, color, musical. Farm family Frake heads for the Iowa state fair. On the first day, both Margy (Jeanne Crain) and brother Wayne (Dick Haynes) meet attractive new flames. The film also stars Dana Andrews.

Feb. 16: “The Pride of the Yankees” (1942), 128 minutes, B/W, biographical. Biopic traces the life of Lou Gehrig (Gary Cooper), famous baseball player who played 2,130 consecutive games before falling victim at age 36 to ALS, a deadly nerve disease that now bears his name. Gehrig is followed from his childhood in New York until his famous “Luckiest Man” speech at his farewell day in 1939. Teresa Wright plays his wife.

Feb. 23: “Force of Evil” (1948), 78 minutes, B/W, crime film noir. Lawyer Joe Morse (John Garfield) wants to consolidate all the small-time numbers racket operators into one big powerful operation. But his elder brother Leo (Thomas Gomez) is one of these small-time operators who wants to stay that way, preferring not to deal with the gangsters who dominate the big-time.

All movies begin at 6 p.m. and are hosted by Dr. C. Richard Bier.
