Garden Club members learn jewelry-making with natural materials

The Crowley Garden Club recently held its first meeting of the year on Jan. 14 in the First United Methodist Church Parlor. All who attended were treated to a delicious Mardi Gras King cake provided by hostess Marlene Brantley and peach iced tea provided by hostess Janis Coignard. 

Sissy Gall discussed the upcoming flower show, which will be held at the Grand Opera House of the South in March. It will be in conjunction with the production of the play, Snow White. 

Reports were made on the recent poinsettia and holiday greens sale, the Cleanest City Contest, which is to begin in February, and the Louisiana Garden Club Federation State Convention, scheduled to take place in Baton Rouge in March. 

The group voted to dedicate three crepe myrtles to the city of Crowley for this year’s Crowley Arbor Day, Jan. 17. The trees will be planted along Eastern Avenue, between 4th and 5th Streets.

All business aside, the members then enjoyed a program presented by Marlene Brantley and her guest, Marsha Bock of Lafayette. The program, “Accessorizing with Plant Matter,” consisted of making necklaces out of natural materials such as cotton twine, wooden beads, bamboo and various seeds. The group learned how to make knots, put together attractive bead placement and create bead closures. Each member left the meeting with a creation of their own to take home.
