The school year was 1952-53, when high school football was the only thing you looked forward to on Friday evenings.
During the school’s annual athletic banquet, the 19 football players who represented their school were honored. A few received lettermen’s jackets, the first time in the school’s history. Jackets were presented to the players who played a certain number of quarters during the football year -- that year being 11 players.
This group of players were the last to play six-man football. The next year (1953-54), half of the schedule was six man and the other half 11, in preparation for the following season where all games were 11-man.
“I didn’t like eleven man near as much as six man,” commented team member John Tubb who donated his lettermen’s jacket to Rayne High School during the 2015 Homecoming Alumni Reception.
“My dad and the dads of Bill Norris and Dale Vincent formed the RHS Quarterback Club that year,” noted Tubb. “They raised money from Rayne merchants to fund the purchase of our jackets. The small trophies we were holding were the only awards given the lettering players at that time.”
RHS Principal Wendall Prudhomme, who accepted Tubb’s lettermen’s jacket during the 2015 Homecoming Alumni Reception, will have it displayed in the school’s showcase.
Football players receiving jackets that first year were Jimmy Breaux, Leslie Dale Vincent, John Tubb, Sigmund Baer, Bill Norris, James Morgan, Austin Breaux, Wilfred Simon, Belton Comeaux, L. H. Baer, Percy Boudreaux.
Head coach was Vincent Chappuis who later became Rayne High principal (1964-70).
