Tradition continued Saturday morning of the 2016 Rayne Frog Festival as new royalty was crowned during the annual Rayne Lions Club Frog Derby, the long-time event held since 1946.
Shelby Bordes was crowned the new Frog Derby Queen, and presented her crown and banner by last year’s honoree, Catherine Castille.
Shelby is the 17-year-old daughter of Pat and Jessica Bordes of Rayne and a junior at Notre Dame High School of Acadia Parish. Her frog for the contest was Sir Boulanger (French Baker).
Micah Guidry was named Frog Jockey Queen, and presented her crown and banner by Corinne Doucet, last year’s honoree. She was also awarded the banner for Miss Congeniality.
Micah is the 16-year-old daughter of Leila Leger and Michael Guidry of Rayne and a sophomore at Rayne High School. Her frog for the contest was Beau. She and Beau recorded the longest jump during the contest and was awarded the “Longest Jump” awards.
For the “Best Costume” portion of the Derby, Blaire Thibodeaux and her entry, “The King” was awarded.
The 1st Maid banner was awarded to Skyler Broussard, 17-year-old daughter of Angel Miller and Anthony Broussard.
Second Maid banner awards were presented to Blaire Thibodeaux, 17-year-old daughter of Robert and Tiffany Gossen.
Making the presentations along with last year’s royalty were Lions Club Chairman Luke Beslin, and Director Lion Dommie Perez, and Co-Director Lion Linda Credeur.
Assisting with the program were fellow Lions Tim Prevost and Craig Houston.
Also assisting with the program were a number of past Frog Derby title holders who served as judges for the “hopping” portion of the program. Former title holders in attendance were Holly Babineaux Richard, Victoria Richard, Jade Guidry Durio and Mia Guidry. Dakota Henry was also in attendance and served as emcee.
Interviews and judging were held Sunday, May 1, at the Rayne Chamber of Commerce Office.
