Inaugural Law Enforcement Conference topic of OneBreakfast

RAYNE - The City of Rayne recently hosted OneAcadia’s OneBreakfast, a regular gathering of Acadia Parish Law Enforcement leaders.
Chief of Police Carrol Stelly and Mayor Chuck Robichaux of Rayne welcomed the group of 17 into the Mural Room.
Bryan Francis, chairman of OneAcadia’s Public Safety, committee maintains that this is one of the most important programs the organization facilitates.
“From these events have come not only some really great discussions, but also action. The crime exchange meetings have resumed and an opportunity for law enforcement to share proactive measures with businesses was born here,” said Francis. “And there are even more concepts being worked on at each meeting.”
One such new concept is the inaugural Acadia Parish Law Enforcement Conference. Special guest at the April OneBreakfast was Scott Privat, Crowley lawyer and assistant district attorney.
“Laws that govern police procedure are updated every year, and it’s important that our officers are aware of these changes, especially for the DA’s office to successfully prosecute criminals,” said Privat.
What began as an idea to bring in Judge Harmon Drew, who updates the Code Book, for a seminar grew into a full-fledged, day-long conference.
“We want to bring value to such an important gathering. Not only will this event offer the knowledge first-hand from Judge Drew, but also share best practices among the departments,” said Laurie Suire, president and CEO of OneAcadia.
“We’ve lined up a dynamic speaker to open the conference and plan to continue to offer such presenters at each conference.”
A primary goal of the conference is to get the updated Code Book in the hands of every law enforcement official.
“The books alone will cost $10,000,” said Privat. “Everyone benefits from a better-prepared, well-trained law enforcement, so we will be reaching out for sponsors to help us purchase these book for our ‘boys in blue’ and to support the inaugural event.”
In addition to discussion of the conference, the OneBreakfast group welcomed new Crowley Police Chief-elect Jimmy Broussard and Acadia Parish Sheriff-elect K.P. Gibson.
Gibson shared new training priorities for the parish agencies, and Duson Chief of Police Kip Judice agreed heartily.
“We know how each of our individual departments are prepared, but training together will make us a better team,” Judice said.
After outlining some of the monthly and quarterly events he has planned, Gibson reiterated that OneAcadia’s OneBreakfast is important to the parish agencies because it brings topics to the chiefs and APSO from the business community.
“When business and law enforcement work together, we are all stronger for it.” he said.
