Breaux's return gives Church Point a boost

CROWLEY – A torn hamstring in the jamboree put Trevor Breaux’s season in jeopardy back in August.
But a quick recovery has him back on the field — and that’s a good thing for Church Point Coach John Craig Arceneaux and his Bears.
His latest contribution: The senior fullback/linebacker rushed for 107 yards on 13 carries, helping propel the Bears to a 38-7 victory over Northwest last week.
That performance not only helped the Bears improve to 5-2 on the season, and 2-0 in District 5-3A play, but it was enough to earn him top honors on this week’s edition of Grid Stars.
“Going into the season, we were looking at Trevor as a kid who was going to really help get us going offensively because he does have some speed, he’s a big body and he has good vision,” said Arceneaux. “In the wing-T, you always want to try to establish the fullback at some point in the game and he has been able to do that for us the last couple of weeks and we’ve seen the offense kind of start to flourish a little bit.”
Breaux picked up 48 yards and two touchdowns on six carries two weeks ago against Pine Prairie and saw limited time the week prior against North Vermilion in his first game back from injury. He was limited to 10-12 plays in that contest.
Breaux, however, wasn’t the only one to have a big night out of the backfield for the Bears.
James Bellard racked up 95 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries while Deion Monroe had 15 carries for 71 yards and two touchdowns against the Raiders. In all, Church Point tallied 341 total yards, all on the ground, in the victory.
Defensively, Tedrick Citizen led the team in tackles in helping the Bears limit the Raiders to just 209 total yards and eight first downs.
The Notre Dame Pioneers were also impressive in their 42-7 thumping of Erath.
The Pios racked up 391 total yards (268 rushing, 123 passing) on the night and they did so with the starters being pulled after the first two series in the second half.
John Michael Besse did most of the damage on the ground with 18 carries for 90 yards and a touchdown. Lance Bertrand followed with six carries for 41 yards and a touchdown.
Brad Stoma completed 10 of 14 pass attempts for 123 yards and two touchdowns. He hit Besse three times for 42 yards and a touchdown and he found Royce Zaunbrecher twice for 21 yards and a score.
Other standout performances were turned in by Iota’s Adam Ardoin, Crowley High’s Chris Lewis and Rayne High’s Trent Duhon.
Ardoin carried the bulk of the load for the Bulldogs in a 34-0 loss at Westlake. He rushed for 148 yards on 35 carries.
Lewis was also impressive in the Gents’ 52-27 loss at LaGrange. The senior running back picked up 132 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.
Duhon led the Wolves with 78 yards and a TD in a 23-11 loss to Eunice.
