CHURCH POINT – Looking at stats from Friday’s match-up between the Rayne High Wolves and the Church Point Bears, one would think of a close, play until the end barn-burner. But, when the last minutes ticked off the scoreboard, the lights told a totally different tale, a 33-3 win for the Wolves.
"Our defense really played well tonight," stated Rayne High Head Coach Curt Ware of the victory over intra-parish rival Church Point. "We have a bunch of key players returning this season and that's really making a difference."
Veteran senior running back Trent Winbush claimed the first score of the night as he managed to thread the sideline for a 70-yard touchdown run, quickly placing Rayne ahead 6-0 mid-way through the first quarter of play.
Opening the second quarter of play was senior wide receiver Jaylon Reed sprinting down the Rayne sideline for a 50-yard touchdown run, extending the Rayne lead to 12-0.
On Church Point’s next drive, the Bears were able to get through a stingy Rayne defense as Austin Manuel split the uprights for a 31-yard field goal and a 12-3 score with Rayne remaining in command.
The productive second quarter continued for the Wolves as quarterback Donald Doucet found Reed for a 26-yard touchdown reception, extending Rayne lead at 18-3.
But, the Rayne defense answered once again as Trent Winbush nabbed an interception, placing the Wolves on their side of the field. Winbush finished what he started with a 30-yard touchdown run just two plays later. Darien Harmon ran in a two-point conversion for a 26-3 Rayne lead as the first half came to a close.
The third quarter was limited to a short TD run by Winbush and an extra point by Morgan Manuel for a 33-3 Rayne lead, which remained until the final buzzer as the second cavalry finished out the final minutes of play.
The Wolves finished the evening with 328 total offensive yards compared to Church Point’s 248.
Leading the Rayne charge was Winbush with 126 yards on 12 carries for three touchdowns. Helping the Rayne effort were Reed (60 yards on 2 carries, 1 TD), John Daigle (3 carries, 21 yards), and Johnny Deculit and Darien Harmon each donating 15 yards.
Doucet finished the evening with six completions of nine attempts for 91 yards in the air.
His receivers were Reed (4 for 71 yards,1 TD), Zach Fontenot (1 for 20 yards) and Harmon.
The stingy Rayne defense was led by Tony Roberts with six tackles, including four solos and four assists, along with one quarterback sack for a loss.
Chipping in four tackles for the Wolves were Torin Roberts and Jamian Evans, while Zack Fontenot and Tavares Poullard three and a half each. Turning in three tackles on the night were Carl Davis and Darian Richard, while Marlon Forman, Richard Breaux, Donald Doucet, Trent Winbush and Tyeece Beverly had two each.
Finishing off the defensive stats were Winbush and Darien Harmon each with an interception, while Tony Roberts, Tavares Poullard and Richard Breaux recorded tackles for a loss.
"Most of our guys did well again tonight, especially our returners," noted Ware of his veteran players, "just like they did last week in the jamboree. They are working well together and we hope to see that continued improvement, along with our new starters who are already stepping their game up."
"In addition to our 11 seniors, we have a good junior class and our sophomores are doing well," Ware added. "They are really filling in where we need them."
