BB Tigers, Cecilia girls claim SMP track titles

BREAUX BRIDGE – The Breaux Bridge Tigers edged Cecilia High School for team championship honors in the 2009 St. Martin Parish Track Meet held April 3 at the BBHS athletic complex. Cecilia’s Lady Tigers claimed the girls division title over St. Martinville and Breaux Bridge.

The Bridge’s Ricky Babineaux and Leland Phillips were awarded outstanding track and field performer honors, respectively, in boosting Breaux Bridge to an 84-78 point lead over the Bulldogs. St. Martinville finished a distant third in the triangular meet with 23 points.

Babineaux earned blue ribbons in the 100-meter dash and 300 hurdles, setting a new parish record of 37.7 seconds in the latter. He had set the old record of 40.1 just last year. Babineaux also ran a leg on BB’s winning 4X400 relay team and placed first in the triple jump.

Phillips earned gold in the high jump and finished second in the long jump.

Another double winner for the Tigers was Carson Thibodeaux, who took blue ribbons in the 1600 and 3200-meter runs.

Cecilia piled up big points in the relays, with Adrien Noel, Mike Wiltz, Brooklyn Williams, Gerald Etienne and Montrel Carter teaming up to win both the 4X100 and 4X200. Etienne also took the gold in the 200-meter dash.

St. Martinville managed only one first place finish, with Jamar Vallier taking the 400-meter dash.

Girls

Cecilia’s Lady Bulldogs were a bit more dominant in the girls division, rolling up 88 points to St. Martinville’s 61, while Breaux Bridge managed only l6.

Lady Bulldogs Chivas Noel and Thea Comeaux were voted outstanding performers in track and field. Noel captured gold in the 3200-meter run and finished seond in the 800 and 1600 while Comeau won the discus throw and placed third in both the shot put and javelin.

Also scoring big points for Cecilia were Alexia Tezeno (1st in the 200 and member of the wnning 4X100 and 4X200 relay teams) and Natasha Wiltz (1st in the long jump and triple jump).

Keyora Martin and Tiffany Richard led SM’s Lady Tigers into second place. Martin had individual golds in the 800 and 1600 while also running a leg on The ’Ville’s winning 4X400 relay team. Richard collected gold in the 100 and 300 hurdles as well as the high jump.

Breaux Bridge’s only blue ribbons came in the 100 (Santina Sneed) and shot put (Regina JeanBatiste).

Breaux Bridge Jr. High won the junior high division of the parish meet, but detailed results were not provided by the host school.
