Lady Wolves fall short at State Volleyball Tournament

KENNER - The Rayne High Lady Wolves Volleyball Team fell short Thursday during the quarterfinal match of Division III at the POnchartrain Center during the LHSAA/State Farm Volleyball State Tournament.

The Lady Wolves fell to the eventual state champions, No. 1-ranked Teurlings Catholic High School, who also captured the district title over Rayne in the regular season.

Rayne High qualified for the state tournament, the first time since 2007, as the No. 8-ranked team and a regional win over Westlake.

In the quarterfinal loss, the Lady Wolves were led at the net by Taylor Arceneaux and Katie Benoit with 5 and 3 kills, respectively. 

Also adding downs for Rayne were Layni Boudreaux, Niesha Domingue, Blair Bergeron, Charlyne Peltier and Charlesha Dugas.

Dugas also recorded a block, while the offense was set up by Mia Guidry with 4 and Layni Boudreaux with 10.

Leading the back row were Mary Peltier with 6 digs, along with Katie Benoit with 5, Mia Guidry with 2 and Taylor Arceneaux with 3.

“They are an extremely good team that is very disciplined,” stated Rayne High Coach Stephanie Garrett of her opponent. “They are very balanced offensively and defensively -- and that’s why they are ranked at the top.”

Concerning her team’s play, Garrett stated, “We didn’t play up to our potential, but considering this was the first time any of our girls  experienced the state tournament atmosphere, I think they did OK.”

Garrett concluded, “I was a little disappointed, but I’m glad for these girls -- that we made it here -- that was a win for us and they have worked had all year long.”
