Rayne High begins basketball

The Rayne High Wolves and Lady Wolves have both begun their 2013-2014 basketball season on a rough note.

In early season action, the Wolves dropped a Tuesday contest to Breaux Bridge and a Friday game to Franklin High.

In the Breaux Bridge loss, the Wolves trailed the entire ballgame. A late-game scoring drive by Rayne saw an opportunity for the Wolves, but fell short in a 51-46 loss.

Leading Rayne scorers was Charles Jones with 18 points, followed by Peyton Larry and Byron Mouton each with eight, five by Drakkar Broussard and four for Trevon Fontenot.

In Friday’s Franklin loss, the tight contest saw the Wolves hold a slight lead going into the final quarter of action. But, the Hornets pulled ahead for the one-point lead, 50-49.

Drakkar Broussard led the Wolves with 13 points, followed by Peyton Larry with eight, and seven by Byron Mouton and Charles Jones.

The Wolves were set to participate in the Acadiana Tournament this week before hitting the road for the Lafayette High Tournament Dec. 4-7.

Lady Wolves

The Lady Wolves opened their early season with a 1-1 start, began with a win at Port Barre Tuesday, but fell to Northside High Friday evening.

In their opener, the Lady Wolves claimed a 49-21 win over the Red Devils. Rayne held a 14-6 first quarter lead and never loss the lead for the win.

Leading the Lady Wolves was Whitley Larry with eight points, 13 rebounds and 11 blocks.

Tori Carriere led the scoring with 15 points, followed by Tanner Wilson with 11 and five points by Tristan Mouton and Charlesha Dugas.

In Friday’s 76-69 loss to Northside High, the Lady Wolves took a slight 12-7 first quarter lead, but the Lady Vikings claimed an 18-point second quarter and never look back for the win.

Charlesha Dugas led the Lady Wolves with 23 points, three rebounds and two steals.

Tristan Mouton followed up with 18 points of her own, along with eight points by Cierra Harmon and a half-dozen by Tanner Wilson, Tori Carriere and Whitley Larry, who also recorded seven blocks on the night.

The Lady Wolves were scheduled to travel to Lafayette High this week before hosting Avoyelles Friday afternoon during a 3 p.m. contest at the Rayne High north gym during Thanksgiving week.
