New ‘Monday Night at the Movies’ lineup

The Crowley Branch of the Acadia Parish Library has announced its latest Monday Night at the Movies lineup.

All movies start at 6 p.m., are free and open to the public and are hosted by Dr. C. Richard Bier.

Oct. 21 – “The Lady Vanishes” (1938), 96 minutes, black and white. While traveling in continental Europe, a rich young playgirl realizes that an elderly lady seems to have disappeared from the train. Director: Alfred Hitchcock. Cast: Barbara Lockwood, Michael Redgrave and Dame May Whitty.

Oct. 28 – “How Green Was My Valley” (1941), 118 minutes, black and white. At the turn of the century in a Welsh mining village, the Morgans (he stern, she gentle) raise coal-mining sons and hope their youngest will find a better life. Director: John Ford. Cast: Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O’Hara and Donald Crisp.

Nov. 4 – “30 Seconds over Tokyo” (1944), 138 minutes, black and white. In the wake of Pearl Harbor, a young lieutenant, Ted Lawson, leaves his expectant wife to volunteer for a secret bombing mission which will take the war to the Japanese homeland. An account of Doolittle’s raid on Tokyo. Director: Mervyn LeRoy. Cast: Van Johnson, Spencer Tracy, Robert Walker and Robert Mitchum.

Nov. 11 – “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” (1945), 128 minutes, black and white. Encouraged by her idealistic if luckless father, a bright and imaginative young woman comes of age in a Brooklyn tenement during the early 1900s. Director: Elia Kazan. Cast: Dorothy McGuire and Joan Blondell, James Dunn.

November 18 – “Johnny Belinda” (1948), 102 minutes, black and white. In post-war Cape Breton, Canada, a doctor’s efforts to tutor a deaf/mute woman are undermined when she is raped, and the resulting pregnancy causes scandal to swirl. The story is based on an actual incident that happened near Harris’s summer residence in Fortune Bridge, Bay Fortune, Prince Edward Island release. Cast: Jane Wyman, Lew Ayres and Charles Bickford.
