New ‘Monday Night at the Movies’ lineup announced

The Acadia Parish Library has announced a new “Monday Night at the Movies” lineup for August and it looks to be an interesting one.
The movies are sponsored by the library and hosted by Dr. C. Richard Bier
Movies begin at 6 p.m.
• Aug. 3: “Sergeant York,” 1941, 134 minutes, black and white
Stars: Gary Cooper, Walter Brennan, Joan Leslie and Ward Bond
Director: Howard Hawks.
“Sergeant York” is based on the true story of World War I hero Sergeant Alvin York. Although a Quaker and a pacifist, he fights for his country and freedom.
• Aug. 10: “The Glass Key,” 1942, 85 minutes, black and white
Stars: Brian Donlevy, Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd.
Director: Stuart Heisler.
During a campaign for reelection, a crooked politician decides to clean up his past, refusing the support of a gangster and associating with the respectable reformist politician Ralph Henry.
• Aug. 17: “Reap the Wild Wind,” 1942, 123 minutes, color
Stars: John Wayne, Paulette Goddard and Ray Milland.
Director: Cecil B. DeMille.
Florida ship salvager Loxi falls for Jack, captain of a ship wrecked on the Key West shore. However, their romance is complicated by the arrival of another suitor, and eventually leads to tragedy.
• Aug. 24: “Sitting Pretty,” 1948, 84 minutes, black and white
Stars: Robert Young, Maureen O’Hara and Clifton Webb.
Director: Walter Lang
Tacey and Harry King are a suburban couple with three sons and a serious need for a babysitter. Tacey puts an ad in the paper for a live-in babysitter, and the ad is answered by Lynn Belvedere. But when she arrives, she turns out to be a man. And not just any man, but a most eccentric, outrageously forthright genius with seemingly a million careers and experiences behind him. Mr. Belvedere works miracles with the children and the house but the Kings have no idea just what he’s doing with his evenings off. And when Harry has to go out of town on a business trip, a nosy parker starts a few ugly rumors. But everything comes out all right in the end thanks to Mr. Belvedere.
• Aug. 31: “A Night to Remember,” 1942, 90 minutes, black and white
Stars: Loretta Young and Brian Aherne.
Director: Richard Wallace
A mystery writer and his newlywed wife move into a Greenwich Village apartment and find themselves with a corpse and a half dozen red herrings.
