Freelands celebrate 50 years

Rev. Dr. Charles and Mrs. Sandy Freeland celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 31.

To commemorate their marriage, they returned to Austin, Texas, accompanied by their children, Chuck and Mary Kay, and two of their four grandchildren. At the request of their children, they toured all of the places where they met, married and honeymooned.

Dr. Freeland graduated from Crowley High School in 1958. Following graduation, he received his Bachelor of Arts from Davidson College in North Carolina and his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin. Dr. Freeland followed his uncle, Paul Freeland, by serving on the Resource Development Committee and Board of Directors of Church World Service (the relief agency for 35 protestant denominations) for eight years. He continues to be a member of the board of directors of LIMCO, Inc., a Crowley agribusiness.

Dr. Freeland served churches in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Hot Springs, Arkansas, before moving to Owasso. He was the organizing pastor for the First Presbyterian Church of Owasso from 1981 to 1988. Following the organization of the Owasso church, Dr. Freeland served as an interim pastor for several other Presbyterian churches in eastern Oklahoma and southern Kansas.

Mrs. Freeland is the former Sandra Lee Dean of Denton, Texas. Now semi-retired, she is a psychotherapist and had a private practice in Owasso for 15 years. She retired from Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital in 2010.

The Freelands have lived in Owasso for 33 years and were honored to be named “Mr. & Mrs. Trail Days” in 2008.

The Freelands are both longtime members of the Owasso Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Owasso. Dr. Freeland is also a member of the Owasso chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association. Mrs. Freeland is a proud member of Owasso chapter of PEO and the Trails End Quilters Guild.
