Laureate Mu hears apron presentation
Members of Laureate Mu chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at the home of Glenda Atkinson on June 2.
Following the opening ritual and the Pledge of Allegiance, President Nancy Tislow read a letter from Teresa Wright regarding a trip that her Girl Scout troop was planning to New York to visit the Girl Scout headquarters in July. A motion was made, seconded and carried that the chapter donate $25 to help fund the trip. Additionally, the treasurer, Atkinson, wrote a check to the Welcome House to cover the chapter’s annual donation to that organization.
After considering a need for bath items for the Welcome House, it was decided that each member would bring towels and wash cloths for the shelter to the next meeting. In addition to those items, members were asked to bring to the next meeting steel scrubbing pads for Miss Helen’s Soup Kitchen. The treasurer collected annual dues from each member.
Program booklets for the new year were distributed by Shirley Griffin.
As a cultural outing, members attended the matinee performance of “Into the Woods” the previous Sunday.
Under “new business,” plans were made to attend the George Rodrigue exhibit in New Iberia followed by lunch on June 26.
Following the business portion of the meeting, Atkinson presented her program, “Aprons and Chicken Scratch. She described “Granny’s apron” and its many uses. Besides keeping her dress clean it was used as a potholder and for carrying eggs from the hen house and apples from the orchard. She wrapped it around her arms to keep warm on chilly days, wiped a perspiring brow when it was warm, wiped children’s tears and noses and quickly dusted off furniture when company was coming.
Atkinson showed a collection of her aprons that she used especially when painting, one of which was decorated with a stitch called chicken scratch. The stitch is a type of cross stitch and is typically done on gingham fabric. She demonstrated how the stitch was made and helped each member to create the pattern.
Following the program, the hostess served refreshments to members Griffin, Jean Hanks, Connie Jaubert, Brenella Joubert, Elsie Rowell, Gloria Stutes, Tislow and Phyllis Triggs.
