Sheriff's office updates accidental death

The death of a 2-year-old that occurred in the 3300 block of Riverside Road on Saturday afternoon has been ruled as accidental following an investigation by the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office.

According to Acadia Parish Sheriff Wayne Melancon, investigators advised that the child’s stepfather drove to the barn located approximately 200 feet from the rear of the residence. Upon his departure from the residence, the child was outside the residence with his mother and three other siblings. The stepfather advised that he unlocked the gate, got back in his vehicle and then drove into the field where the barn and horses were located. He then stopped and exited the vehicle to secure the gate. Upon doing so, he noticed the child lying on the ground.

The Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Acadia Parish Coroner’s Office, Acadian Ambulance and Evangeline Fire Department.
