CROWLEY - K.P. Gibson has announced that he will be a candidate for the office of Acadia Parish Sheriff in the Oct. 24 elections.
His announcement is as follows:
“Today, I am excited to announce my candidacy to be the next sheriff of Acadia Parish. My decision to seek the position of sheriff is based on my belief that new leadership will bring a new vision for law enforcement in Acadia Parish.
“I would like for the citizens of Acadia Parish to know that I have been listening to your concerns and will work diligently to address your needs as your next sheriff.
“My plan will focus on increasing the manpower in the enforcement jobs of the sheriff’s office to better serve our citizens. By increasing the deputies on patrol, numerous goals will be achieved. Additional uniformed deputies will provide our parish with a more proactive patrol, will establish smaller patrol zones for a quicker response to our citizens’ needs and also will reduce the maintenance costs on our patrol units. This will also provide a safer environment for our first responders to make sure that they return to their families safely.
“Other enforcement needs will focus on investigations and narcotics manpower. With the use and distribution of illegal narcotics contributing to nearly 70 percent of the crime in society, we must become more aggressive against this illegal trade. We must never stop fighting this epidemic.
“As your next sheriff, I will travel to the various communities within our parish on a regular basis to be accessible to our citizens to address your concerns. My community involvement is not just in election year, I have been and will remain involved in all communities within our parish. These plans are just the beginning and they will be provided to our citizens with no additional cost to our tax payers.
“I started my law enforcement career in 1991 with the Lafayette Police Department. During my tenure, I served as a patrol officer in the Lafayette North District, served as a Field Training Officer and served as a Criminal Investigator.
“I also volunteered as a member of the SWAT team, serving as a Hostage Negotiator and member of the Dignitary Protection Team.
“During my time with the Lafayette Police Department, I received hundreds of hours of training and numerous awards.
“In 2002, the citizens of Crowley elected me as chief of police, an honor I still hold today. Working with my staff, the Crowley Police Department has grown tremendously.
“Under my leadership, the department has created a Narcotics Division resulting in over 4,000 arrests, seizure of 186,000 grams of marijuana, 11,000 grams of cocaine and 10,000 various pills. The department has also seized over $500,000 in assets from drug proceeds.
“Other programs such as the sex offender registration and evaluation program, alcohol and tobacco compliance checks, vehicle safety checkpoints and the ‘Shop with a Cop’ program have been established and remain in effect to this day.
“I was instrumental in the creation of Crime Stoppers of Acadia Parish, LLC. For the past 10 years, I have served as the director for Crime Stoppers of Acadia Parish. During this period, Crime Stoppers has paid out over $50,000 in rewards for information to solve crime here in Acadia Parish.
“Budget management has been a main focus under my administration. Handling tax payers money is a responsibility that I take very serious. With no additional cost to the citizens I serve, the Crowley Police Department has received over $300,000 in grant funding and over $1 million in capital improvements for the department.
“I have been married to Monica Sonnier Gibson for the past 22 years. We are the proud parents of two sons: Cameron, age 19, and Carter, age 4. My wife and I were born and raised in Acadia Parish. Many years ago we decided to raise our family in this great parish which is rich in tradition and culture.
“At 46 years of age, I am not near my retirement age and I have the drive and the passion to serve our citizens.
On October 24, 2015, you will be asked to elect a new sheriff for Acadia Parish. I know that I can take our law enforcement needs to the next level for the future of our families and our businesses.
“I am available to meet with our citizens to answer your questions and to listen to your needs. My campaign phone number is 337-441-0001.
“I ask that you please vote for me and allow me to work for you so that I can prove to you that my plan will become a reality to benefit all of Acadia Parish.
“I humbly ask for your vote and most of all your prayers.”
