George Melancon, a 20-year veteran of law enforcement, has declared his intention to run for the office of Rayne Chief of Police.

He has previously held the position of Rayne’s chief from 1970-78 and from 1998-2006.

“I would like to improve law enforcement in Rayne and serve our citizens equally and impartially,” said Melancon.

After his first two terms as Rayne’s chief of police, Melancon moved to Houston for 20 years. Upon moving back to Rayne, he was elected to the position again and was re-elected in 2002.

Melancon was raised in Rayne and attended Rayne High school. He passed both the civil service tests for the Louisiana State Police and the City of Rayne. He also attended law enforcement school.

The election is Nov. 4.
