Melancon won't seek re-election

Acadia Parish Sheriff Wayne A. Melancon announced Wednesday that he will not see re-election in October this year.

“I’ve had a very rewarding career,” Melancon said with a smile. “It’s time to start a new chapter in my life.

“I began my law enforcement career with the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office in 1977 at the age of 25. Throughout my career, I have served as a corrections officer, a patrol officer, a detective and as chief criminal deputy. In 2004 I was honored to be chosen as sheriff by the people of Acadia Parish.

“As sheriff, I have always strived to do the right things for the right reasons. It has been an honor to serve and protect the people of Acadia Parish.

“I would also like to thank the Acadia Parish deputies for their support, dedication and professionalism to me and to the people of Acadia Parish.

“With ever-changing time in today’s society, we are aware of the future challenges that our community faces. I hope and pray that whoever the people choose as their next sheriff will be up to the task of moving Acadia Parish forward.

“I am looking forward to retirement in 2016. I plan to travel and spend time with family and friends.

“Thank you, Acadia Parish, for your kindness and support throughout my career. I will always be grateful.”
