Runoff election round up: Cassidy wins Senate seat; Smith elected judge

Rayne election decided as well

It didn't take long after the polls closed to call the U.S. Senate race over and in favor of U.S. Rep. Bill Cassidy.

The unofficial final tally for the Republican Cassidy saw him take nearly 56 percent of the vote Saturday, or 712,330 votes. The incumbent Mary Landrieu, a Democrat, pulled in 44.06 percent of the vote, or 561,099 votes.

Locally, the eyes were much more on a race for 15th judicial district judge and a handful of Rayne races.

In the runoff election between David Smith and Mike Goss, Smith pulled in 70.33 percent of the votes to Goss' 29.67 percent.

The following is a breakdown of the Rayne-area races:

  • City Marshal, city of Rayne: Alex "Joe" Lacroix was elected for the position with 51.65 percent of the vote over Jamie Conques (48.35 percent). There were 145 votes that separated the two candidates.
  • Constable, Ward 4: Douglas R. Short was elected with 58.03 percent of the vote over "Mike" Habetz (41.97 percent). There were 330 votes that separated the two candidates
  • Chief of Police, city of Rayne: Carroll J. Stelly was elected with 51.64 percent of the vote over Joseph "Joe" Caillet (48.36 percent). There were 101 votes that separated the two candidates.
  • Alderman, Ward 1, city of Rayne: Curtrese Minix was elected with 52.51 percent of the vote over Anna "Ann" Domingue-Washington (47.49 percent). There were 29 votes that separated the two candidates.
  • Alderman, Ward 2, city of Rayne: Kenneth Guidry was elected with 54.24 percent o the vote over Larry J. Menard (45.76 percent). There were 58 votes that separated the two candidates.
  • Alderman, Ward 4, city of Rayne: James "Jimmy" Fontenot was elected with 56.01 percent of the vote over Gerald Foreman (43.99 percent). There were 100 votes that separated the two candidates.

The two of Iota had two 5 mills propositions on the December ballot, they were both approved for a period of 10 years. The first was approved by 63.56 percent of the vote, the second with 62.93 percent.
