Rice Festival garners top honor

Named Festival of the Year at La. Fairs and Festivals Convention

It apparently takes more than a little rain to prevent  people from noticing the tremendous amount of hard work that goes into putting on the International Rice Festival.

Crowley’s Festival was named the Festival of the Year at the Louisiana Fairs and Festivals Conference in Baton Rouge on Sunday. It was the second consecutive year the Rice Festival received the award.

The Festival also took the honors for Best Poster and Best T-Shirt.

According to Rice Festival Co-Chairman Gene Williams, the judges look at the festival’s scrapbook, which displays each of the events that goes into putting on the festival.

“I’m very proud,” he said. “When people see how well-organized we are and all the hard work we put in, it helps distinguish us from the other festivals.”

Williams was sure to mention Rice Festival Coordinator Roxie Viator, who does much of the “behind the scenes” work prior to the festival.

“I spoke with Roxie this morning and she sounded very excited,” he said. “I told her that a lot of this award is because of her.”

The 2013 International Rice Festival poster was designed by area artist Tony Bernard.

The Louisiana Fairs and Festivals Convention was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Baton Rouge.
