During a rather brief meeting of the Crowley City Council, the group discussed awarding construction contracts, issuing liquor licenses and the progress of the Interstate 10 service road project.
The meeting was rescheduled from its original Tuesday time due to the Mardi Gras holiday.
The meeting began with a public hearing to finalize the rededication of the half-cent sales tax that would be used to increase city employee salaries and help to pay city employee benefits such as Medicare, retirement and worker’s compensation. There were no proponents or opponents in attendance and the measure passed.
While the ordinance has benefits for all city employees, it was Chief of Police K.P. Gibson’s desire to increase the starting pay of his officers that produced a Nov. 21, 2015, special election for the tax rededication.
The council also considered reissuing beer and liquor licenses to Zhu Ying Brignt, who operates Asian Buffet, located at 2108 N. Parkerson Ave., and K&L Grocery, which operates out of 1510 W. Hutchinson Ave. Both of the businesses received the council’s approval for the licenses.
The council also agreed to consider a resolution and call for a public hearing to introduce an ordinance which would have a four-way stop sign placed at the intersection of 12th Street and Crawford Avenue.
Alderwoman Ezora Proctor announced plans for a political forum with the candidates in the upcoming election for Chief of Police. The forum will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 6:30 p.m.
The election became necessary when Gibson won the race for Acadia Parish Sheriff. He will take office on July 1.
Also, Alderman Tim Monceaux announced that he would like to “clean up South Crowley.”
“It will take some work but I’m hoping we can get it done with the support of our citizens,” he said.
