City to help fund Belgian Twinning

When the Belgian contingent from Crowley’s sister city, Vaux Sur Sur, arrives later this month, the city will help ensure that their stay is a pleasant one. 

During their Tuesday meeting, the city council agreed to give $1,000 to those who are in charge of providing entertainment for the group. 

“This has been going on for 25 years,” said Crowley Mayor Greg Jones. “They haven’t been here in four years and it’s important to be gracious hosts.” 

Jones estimated that between 30 and 40 people would be part of the arriving group. 

During the Public Safety Committee’s report, the city agreed to hold a public comment meeting regarding adding a school zone designed to slow traffic on East 17th Street near St. Michaels School. Apparently, that section, which is used as a drop off zone for students, has been a source of complaints about people speeding through the area. The council unanimously approved the motion. 

Also during the Public Safety report, the council approved a Class B Retail Package Beer Permit and a Class B Retail Package Liquor Permit for More 4 Less. The business is located at 726 East Second St. in Crowley. 

During the Revenue and Finance Committee report, council members approved a new maintenance agreement with the person who works on the city’s website. Apparently, the woman who had been servicing Crowley’s site has left the company that had a prior agreement with the city. It was obvious that members of the council wanted to retain her services. 

“We have a great website and it is important that we maintain it,” said Alderman Elliot Dore. 

The $20 an hour fee that the woman charges for her services also impressed the council. 

The next Crowley City Council meeting is scheduled for May 13. Committee meetings will be held on Wednesday, May 7.
