The Crowley City Council met Tuesday night for their final meeting of 2015.
With the Notre Dame High School Pioneers bringing home a state title, Erin Cradeur being sworn into her new position as Crowley City Clerk as well as bit of holiday spirit, the meeting could almost be described as a “feel good” atmosphere.
Cradeur was sworn in by City Attorney Tom Regan and will be taking the place of longtime City Clerk Judy Istre, who retired last month.
After a round of applause, Mayor Greg Jones smiled and said, “Erin, welcome to the show.”
Mayor Jones then read a proclamation which congratulated the Notre Dame High School football team on winning the school’s fifth state championship.
“The city of Crowley would like to congratulate the Notre Dame High School football team, led by Coach Lewis Cook and his staff, for an outstanding, undefeated, championship season,” he said.
He was also sure to mention Crowley High School on their undefeated regular season.
“The city of Crowley went 26-1 this year,” said Jones. “That ain’t bad.”
Alderwoman Kitty Valdetero, possibly referring to the joint pep rally for both schools two weeks ago, said that “these two teams really brought the city of Crowley together.”
In other news, Alderwoman Ezora Proctor said that she had updates on former Alderwoman Laurita Pete, who left the council midway through her final term, and Alderman Vernon “Step” Martin, who recently underwent surgery.
“Mrs. Pete is very alert and said to tell you all that she feels blessed to be alive,” said Proctor. “Also, Alderman Martin is recovering at home. The doctor told him to stay off his feet for a while.”
During the Community and Economic Development Committee’s report, Mayor Pro-Temp Steven Premeaux reported that the work on the roof at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center is now complete and is just awaiting a final inspection.
“It looks so much better than it did,” he said. “No more leaks and the paint job inside the building looks outstanding.”
The council agreed to call for a public hearing on whether to proceed with the condemnation on two properties. One was located at 626 N. Western Ave. and is owned by Edmonia Moore. The other location is at 417 W. Hutchinson Ave. and is owned by Kelly J. Bourque.
The council also agreed to issue beer and liquor permits to two new businesses near in the downtown area - Fat Boy’s located at 1115 S. Second St. and Confit Catering located at the former location of The Courtyard at 422 N. Parkerson Ave.
It was also announced that following the canvassing of the election results, everything was in order.
Before adjourning Mayor Jones wished the council and everyone in attendance a “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year” and urged that everyone be safe during the holidays.
The next city council meeting is scheduled for Jan. 12, 2016.
