In a packed gym, 125 were given diplomas and graduated from Crowley High School Thursday night to become “citizens of the world,” as Principal Perry Myles put it.

“I would suggest that the past 12 years were to prepare you for a new life,” he said in his opening remarks.

Interspersed with performances from the Crowley High School Band and Glee Club, four valedictorians addressed the audience, offering words of inspiration and reflection.

The band also played “Pomp and Circumstance” as the graduates entered the gym. The Glee Club offered up not only “The Star-Spangled Banner” but “Firework,” which drew a few smiles from the graduates that mouthed the words to the song.

Jaimi Broussard welcomed those who were in attendance and talked about how graduation was not only a celebration, but a chance to also reminisce on the last four years.

“Growing up, we all heard ‘You better enjoy high school, because those years will be your best years’,” she said. “We can all relate to that, but we also have great years moving forward.”

Leighton Killmer spoke next and talked about graduation as a moment to be remembered.

“This moments feels almost like a dream,” he said. “We spent our whole childhood fantasizing about it, believing it would never actually come.

“This is a moment we will remember forever.”

Valedictorian address number three came from Meghan Medus, who opened with a whimsical Dr. Seuss quote before talking about how adversity has been character-building for all the graduates.

“Sometimes you struggle, but all of those struggles are just building the foundation for the rest of our lives,” she said.

Finally, Courtney Suire spoke of how the graduating class of 2014 is full of success stories of people who have stumbled and fallen only to get back up stronger than ever.

“I’ve seen so many of my classmates stumble and fall more than once,” she said. “But, I’m also very proud to say that I have seen those same classmates get back and become better students, as well as better people because of their mistakes.”

After the addresses and pageantry of the opening items, the school welcomed two special guests to present special awards to several students. A.J. Jones, representing the American Legion Post 15,  presented the Post 15’s Legion awards to Courtney Suire before Thomas Cavell and Orlando Wilson, representing the American Legion Post 504, presented Post 504’s Legion awards to Alexis Stevens and Mylan Stevens.

The final award of the evening is one Crowley High School holds very dear to the school. Each year, the senior class and members of the school’s faculty choose one graduating senior to be appointed into the school’s Hall of Fame. Assistant Principal Alton Allen announced the appointee as Killmer.
