To open its meeting Monday night, the Acadia Parish School Board recognized a group of students that don’t often get major acknowledgment – band members.
Two high school band members in all of Acadia Parish were among those chosen to the 2016 Southwest Louisiana Band Director’s Association Honor Band. They are Luke Broussard, Midland High, selected to the 2016 concert band’s percussion section; and Nick Arnaud, Rayne High, selected to the 2016 wind ensemble for the tuba. There is also a symphonic band chosen each year.
Clinicians this year were Gary Green, wind ensemble; Catherine Rand, symphonic band; and Carolyn Herrington, concert band. Clinics were held Jan. 21-23 at Angelle Hall at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
“They were in our parish honor band (as well),” said Stephen Duplechin, supervisor of secondary/vocational education. “There were a lot of students involved in [the regional competition], so it is definitely a very large honor.”
Broussard and Arnaud earned the honor after trying out for the bands. The region consists of seven parishes meaning both high school students faced tough and extensive competition.
The board has designated Monday, Feb. 22, and Monday, March 7, as it’s next committee and board meeting dates, respectively.
