David Savoy will serve as president of the Acadia Parish Police Jury for the coming year.
Following the oaths of office here Monday night, members of the jury elected officers for 2016.
In addition to Savoy, jurors selected Robert Guidry to serve as vice president for 2016.
The two were elected by identical 5-3 votes.
Also nominated for the president’s seat was Charles “Danny” Hebert while Charles “Chuck” Broussard was nominated for the position of vice president.
Voting with Savoy and Guidry were Kerry Kilgore, Jimmie Pellerin and Richard Faul.
Ronald “Ronnie” Fabacher voted with Hebert and Broussard.
In a switch from tradition, jurors voted to advertise to fill the position of secretary-treasurer, a post that had for years been appointed for a two-year term.
On a motion by Faul, seconded by Fabacher, the jury will advertise the position for a period of 15 days beginning Jan. 15.
Applications will be reviewed at the Feb. 2 committee meetings and the position is expected to be filled at the Feb. 9 full jury meeting.
Richard “Dickie” Latiolais has held that position for the last four years.
Only Guidry voted against the motion, explaining after the meeting that he “only wanted to give jurors the option of filling the seat tonight if they wanted to.”
In the only other order of business on Monday night’s agenda, jurors set meeting dates for the coming year.
The jury will continue to hold committee meetings on the first Tuesday of each month with the regular monthly meeting of the full panel to be held on the second Tuesday.
All meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Deputy Clerk of Court Blane Faulk administered the oath of office to the jurors at the outset of the Monday meeting.
Among the panel are five freshmen jurors, including Hebert, Fabacher, Broussard, Kilgore and Faul.
Returning jurors include Pellerin, Savoy and Guidry.
