New officers preside over Post 77 Legion meeting

RAYNE - Under the slate of new officers, Arceneaux Post 77 of the American Legion held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Legion Home.
Commander David Simon presided over a number of committee reports and plans for upcoming events.
Under membership, it was reported that 98 members were paid up for the new membership year, including 48% of the anticipated goal.
Concerning the awaited major VA clinics at Lafayette and Lake Charles, bids were being received for interim clinics to serve veterans while the major clinics are built. The interim clinics should be operable by December of this year, while the new major clinics planning ground breaking near the end of 2016 despite any additional setbacks or delays.
An entertainment report thanked everyone who has helped with recent bands and gave a listing of upcoming entertainment planned at the Legion.
Under entertainment, it was also voted upon to allow the ladies of Auxiliary Unit 77 to assume the overseeing and service of refreshments in the kitchen during band nights and special events; therefore, purchasing concession supplies and keeping all kitchen profits. It was also decided Auxiliary Unit 77 would assume responsibility of one night of entertainment every other month at the door and pay for the band.
Discussion was held concerning Rayne’s anticipated “Veterans Park” to be built at Gossen Memorial Park. Engraved bricks are still being sold at City Hall and monetary donations are continuing to be made towards the project. Plans and meetings have been set for the project, with a report expected at the next Legion meeting.
It was announced Post 77 will be the site of the upcoming 7th District Oratorical Contest planned Feb. 7, 2016. Post 77 is providing the setting for the event which will be overseen by the 7th Disrict Chairperson.
A report for the November Veterans Appreciation Meal slated during the November meeting was given. The event, which will coinside with Veterans Day, will host all Acadia Parish veterans and will be hosted by all Legion posts in Rayne. A more complete report will be given at the September meeting.
