SLCC offers $60,000 in scholarships

Marathon Petroleum Scholarship only for students at Acadian Campus

More than $60,000 in scholarships is available for the upcoming academic year at South Louisiana Community College, including its Acadian Campus in Crowley.

New and continuing students can apply for SLCC scholarships through May 1.

Through the generosity of donors in Acadiana, dozens of students will have a portion or nearly all of their education for the 2014-2015 academic year paid.

Some of the area donors establishing spring scholarships are C.L. Jack Stelly & Associates, Home Furniture, KATC TV-3, iConvergence, Elder Outreach, Popeyes, Johnston Street Java, and more. This year, several families across Acadiana have also established memorial scholarships to establish long-term legacies in the names of loved ones.

Several of the 24 scholarships available this academic year are open to all students, while others are specific to a student’s campus location and/or major.

Those at Crowley’s campus are working hard to draw students from the Acadia Parish area.

“Students can start their first semester of college in Crowley without having to leave the community and save on tuition money,” said Dr. Barbara Benson who teaches the school’s new biofuels curriculum. “This will give the younger student a good start toward most college majors with the security and convenience of not leaving home.

“This is also good for young mothers that want  to go to college but cannot leave the immediate area to do so,”  Benson added. “A new set of general education courses will also be available to students in the spring for students that wish to continue the pursuit of their college degree here in the  Crowley area.”

One scholarship specific to the Acadian Campus is the Marathon Petroleum Alternative and Chemical Process Technology Scholarship.

This scholarship is for students in the Alternative and Chemical Process Technology program exclusive to the Crowley campus.

Students interested in applying for the scholarships should visit SLCC’s website at www.solacc.edu and click on Student Scholarships under Quick Links.

Deadline to apply for the spring scholarships is Thursday, May 1. The Fall 2014 semester begins Monday, Aug. 18.

SLCC is a comprehensive community college that operates campuses in Abbeville, Crowley, Franklin, Lafayette, New Iberia, Opelousas, St. Martinville and Ville Platte.
