Today is last day to register to vote in April 5 election

Richard area voters face parcel fee renewal

Today, March 5, is the final day to register to vote or to make changes to voting registrations for the April 5 primary election.

The ballot in Acadia Parish is thin, with the Richard area being the only one with something to decide on April 5.

Residents of Fire Protection District No. 1 have been paying a $50 parcel fee dedicated to paying expenses associated with fire protection. The renewal is for a period of 10 years, beginning this year.

If renewed, the fee will be levied on “each lot, subdivided portion of ground or individual tract upon which is located, either in whole or in part, a residential or commercial structure, regardless of the structure’s being occupied or unoccupied.”

Based on current population, the fee is expected to raise an estimated $42,000 annually.

Approximately 1,300 registered voters will cast ballots at four voting precincts — two at Richard Elementary School, one at Church Point City Hall and one at the LSU-Eunice Health & Physical Education Building — on April 5.

Early voting is March 22-29, excluding March 23. Runoff elections, if necessary, will be on the May 3 ballot. For early voting, office hours will be from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

“Louisiana’s registration statistics are quite strong with approximately 84 percent of eligible citizens registered,” Secretary of State Tom Schedler said in a news release. “However, you can’t vote if you’re not registered so it’s important for everyone to check their status right now and take care of any updates that need to be made.”

Individuals can register to vote online 24 hours a day, seven days a week at www.geauxvote.com.

In addition, voter registration opportunities are available at the parish Registrar of Voters office, located at 568 NW Court Circle, on the grounds of the Acadia Parish Courthouse, in Crowley.

Louisianians can also utilize the secretary of state’s smartphone app, GeauxVote Mobile, to check the status of their registration, review sample ballots and find polling place information.

Registrar of Voters Billie J. Meyer reminds that voters will be required to present proper identification to vote — a driver’s license or ID card and voter identification card.

Voters who require assistance during early voting or when they go to their voting precincts on election day are required to bring a physician’s certificate or excuse stating the reason they need assistance. This document is to be given to the Registrar or to the Commissioner-in-Charge to be delivered to the Registrar.
