Lady Pios sweep All-Parish basketball top honors
CROWLEY – Bigger is not always better.
Never was that more evident than the 2013-14 girls’ basketball season and the Notre Dame Lady Pios’ team roster.
While they may have lacked in numbers – having one of the smallest rosters in the state – the Lady Pios certainly didn’t lack in talent.
Coach Nolan Theriot’s small, but talented team swept through District 6-3A play with an undefeated record of 10-0 and went posted a 24-4 regular-season record on their way to earning the No. 5 seed in the Class 3A state playoffs.
For those efforts, Theriot and guard Sam Lyons took home the top honors - Coach of the Year and the Most Valuable Player - on the 2013-14 All-Acadia Parish Girls Basketball Team.
Theriot led his team on a 17-game winning streak to close out the regular season and his Lady Pios made it all the way to the quarterfinals before being ousted by No. 4 Albany, 59-56.
Lyons was a major part of the Lady Pios’ success.
The 5-foot-8 senior scored 12.1 points per game while scoring from pretty much everywhere on the floor. She also grabbed 7.4 rebounds per game and dished out 4.3 assists.
Lyons is joined on the squad by fellow teammates Madelyn LeJeune and Alex Miller.
LeJeune, a junior, led the Lady Pios in scoring with 14.9 points per outing while also grabbing 8.3 boards. Miller averaged 11.5 points, nine rebounds and 5.1 assists.
Iota’s Brittany Johnson and Jillian Boone were also tabbed to the team after helping lead the Lady Dogs to the second round of the playoffs. The junior duo, both long-range threats, averaged 13 and 11 points per game, respectively.
Also earning honors are Crowley’s Alanna Plummer (18 ppg), Midland’s Kristen Breaux (17 ppg), Rayne’s Charlesha Dugas (17 ppg), Church Point’s Raven Alexander (14.2 ppg) and Northside Christian’s Madeline Gatte.
Honorable mentions on this year’s team include Notre Dame’s Gabbie Romero, Iota’s Mallory Faul, Crowley’s Myah Rogers, Rayne’s Whitley Larry, Northside’s Madisyn Clement, Midland’s Macy Hoffpauir and Church Point’s Shondrika Boast.
