Church Point slips past Cecilia

CHURCH POINT - The Church Point High Bears protected their home field here Friday night by scoring a fourth-quarter touchdown to overcome a 36-33 deficit and claim a 40-36 win over the Cecilia High Bulldogs.
Both teams enjoyed great success rushing the football. The Bulldogs finished with 277 yards on the ground, while the Bears finished with 342 rushing yards. Deion Monroe led the Bears with 149 yards on 27 rushes and Raymond Calais ran 22 times for 254 yards to lead the Bulldogs.
Cecilia took an early 14-0 lead as Damien Bernard caught touchdown passes of 16 and 49 yards from quarterback Landon Roberts in the first quarter.
The Bears answered with a touchdown pass of 69 yards from Troy Matte to Frederick Williams and an 18-yard scoring run by Deion Monroe.
Cecilia scored twice in the second quarter on touchdown runs of eight and 82 yards by Calais. Monroe scored the Bears’ lone touchdown of the second quarter as they trailed 28-21.
Monore and Williams each scored in the third quarter while Calais added a 60-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a 36-33 lead.
But the Bears’ Christian Veronie scored on an 8-yard run and Kian Richard kicked the PAT with 10:31 left in the game to put the Bears ahead 40-36 for the eventual win.
