Church Point dominates Pine Prairie

CHURCH POINT – The Church Point Bears scored early and often Friday evening in a 55-6 District 5-3A victory over Pine Prairie.
The Bears (6-0, 1-0) scored seven touchdowns in the first half and added one in the third with the reserves on the field.
Tyler Wheeler got the Bears’ going with a 29-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter and Christian Veronie punched in another score from one-yard out. Veronie scored again on a 23-yard run  to push Church Point’s lead to 21-0 with 1:43 remaining in the first quarter.
Frederick Williams added a 45-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second quarter before Pine Prairie finally got on the board with a 91-yard touchdown pass from Dylan Doucet to Allen Myles.
The Bears responded with a pair of touchdowns from Deion Monroe, the first from 10 yards out and the second from three. Veronie then scored for the third time on the night on a one-yard run to give the Bears a commanding 48-6 cushion at the half.
The reserves took the field in the second half and Trey Babineaux hauled in a 31-yard scoring strike from Logan Marks to cap the scoring for the night.
The Bears totaled 397 yards on the ground and 99 through the air on the night.
Veronie lead all rushers with 94 yards on nine carries while Jonathan Duplechain had 74 yards on four carries. Williams added three carries for 46 yards and Monroe posted 41 yards on 10 touches.
Starting quarterback Troy Matte completed five passes for 60 yards while Marks had one completion for 31 yards.
Babineaux had one catch for 31 yards and Wheeler had one for 20 yards. Monroe also hauled in two passes for 17 yards.
