Rayne –– Funeral services were held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Monday, March 9, 2015, at 2:30 p.m. for Wilton Joseph Benoit, 89, who died Saturday, March 7, 2015, at his residence in Rayne, LA.
Interment was in the St. Joseph Cemetery #2, Mausoleum, Rayne, LA.
Surviving are two daughters, Christine Benoit Melancon of Rayne, and Ellen Benoit Dailey and husband, Clayton Dailey, of Rayne; two sons, Dr. Larry Benoit and wife, Victoria Ludington Benoit, of Lafayette, and Michael B. Benoit and wife, Linda Edwards Benoit, of Rayne; eleven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; and one brother-in-law, Charles Beaugh, Jr. and wife Eva.
He was preceded in death by wife, Hazel Beaugh Benoit; one infant daughter, Mary Beth Benoit; parents, Ophie Benoit, Jr. and Louise Bearb Benoit; three sisters, Emma “Rose” Benoit Thibodeaux, Marjorie Benoit Smith, and Isabelle Benoit McBride; and one brother, Mervin “Blackie” Benoit.
Mr. Benoit served in the United States Navy in WWII aboard the USS Mellette in the Pacific Theater, and witnessed the official surrender in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945. He was a member of Knights of Columbus 2nd and 3rd degree, and The American Legion in Rayne, LA.
A rosary was recited Sunday, March 8, 2015, at 6:30 p.m. at Gossen Funeral Home in Rayne, LA.
Friends were received at Gossen Funeral Home, Inc., Rayne, Sunday, March 8, 2015, 4:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Monday, March 9, 2015, 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
