Prep Roundup: Gents upend Rayne
RAYNE – The District 4-4A race hasn’t quite hit the midway point yet, but the Crowley Gents took a huge step in making sure they stay in the hunt for that league title on Sunday.
The Gents jumped out to an early lead and held off a late rally by Rayne to slip away with a 6-3 victory over the Wolves at Legion Field.
The Gents (15-2, 5-0) got a big day from Alex Ashby in the victory. The junior catcher went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple. He also scored three times.
Ashby doubled to the right center field gap in the first inning and crossed the plate two batters later when Pate Broussard (1-3, 2 RBI), grounded out to third base.
Will Doughty got the Gents going again in the third inning with a leadoff infield single. Ashby then hit the right centerfield gap again, this time for an RBI triple. He crossed the plate himself one batter later when Zack Breaux singled to right. Breaux scored later in the inning on a groundout by Haden Erbe.
The Wolves finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning when Brice Meche recorded an RBI single off of Erbe.
The score remained 4-1 until the sixth inning when Blayne Sonnier, courtesy running for Erbe who had walked, scored on a fielder’s choice.
Broussard picked up an RBI in the top of the seventh and the Wolves plated two runs in the bottom of the frame on sacrifice fly by Jaylon Reed and a wild pitch.
Erbe logged the victory on the mound after surrendering one run on three hits and two walks. He struck out 10 in five innings of work.
Ben Broussard was credited with the save after allowing two runs on one hit and two walks. He struck out two in the final two innings.
Also logging hits for the Wolves were Grant Abshire and Austin Coleman with a single each.
