Duson man charged in shooting death of Eunice man Sunday
Kenneth Prather, 34, of Duson, has been charged in the shooting death of Jordy Francis Bellard, 31, of Eunice, on Sunday.
A 31-year-old Church Point woman, wounded in the hand during the incident on Shelton Manuel Road near Eunice was detained, but released, according to Lt. Clay Higgins, a St. Landry Parish sheriff’s spokesman.
The woman’s identify has not been released.
Prather has been charged with second-degree murder, possession of schedule I drugs, possession of schedule II drugs, possession of schedule III drugs, and possession of schedule IV drugs.
The report said deputies learned of the incident from a 911 call at 8:09 a.m. Sunday, said Lt. Higgins.
Detectives determined the men had become involved in an argument inside a residence, which escalated into a shooting, he said.
The Eunice man was killed and the Church Point woman was struck in the arm with a non-life threatening wound, he said.
“Evidence indicates that the three individuals had a history together, that the female had some sort of domestic relationship with each man separately at some point in the past or currently,” Higgins said.
The woman was treated and released from Acadian Medical Center, he said.
Detectives said the Eunice man died prior to their arrival, he said, and the body was released to Quirk’s Funeral Home after the investigation.
The woman and man were detained, he said.
Higgins said a handgun and shotgun were removed from the scene.
St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said in the news release, “Our detectives are conducting a very thorough investigation and we will determine precisely what happened inside that residence. Every possible scenario will be considered. If probable cause exists for charges to be filed, then my detectives will most certainly move forward with the appropriate arrest or arrests.”
