Annual Memorial Day program planned by American Legion

During Tuesday’s American Legion meeting of Arceneaux Post 77, Commander David Simon announced final plans for the annual Memorial Day program hosted by Post 77.
The 2016 event will be held Sunday, May 29, at 10:30 a.m. for the general public. Special guests will include family members of veterans who have passed on during the past year, in addition to Gold Star family members. A guest speaker is being planned for the program.
Final plans were also discussed for the Legion BBQ Dinner Sale held Sunday, April 10, at the Legion Home. The BBQ pork plate lunches were sold by legionnaires for a ticket price donation of $8 each. Legionnaires and volunteers were also asked to donate their time for prep work, cooking, and serving the day of the event.
The memorial report was given by Robert Comeaux which included veteran Daniel “Nappy” Landry, Sr. who died on March 20, 2016.
Under membership, Ray Olinger reported 187 member dues have been paid or 91% of the Post’s goal.
An update was given of the new pool table now available the expanded bar area of Post 77. Plans were also being made for an upcoming pool tournament to held soon.
The schedule for musical entertainment was announced, in addition to the addition of an increase in bar sales since the Legion Home is now open on Wednesday evenings. Monday is being considered for expanded days and hours of the bar area.
A list of awards and what schools will be attended by legionnaires for the upcoming end of the school year awards program to conclude the 2015-2016 school year will be provided by Lisa Soileaux of the Rayne Acadian-Tribune. Once received, legionnaires can volunteer their attendance to present Legion awards to deserving students at local and areas schools.
A maintenance report was given by Robert Comeaux of the many projects and repairs recently completed at the Legion Home.
A reminder was given for a poker run on Saturday, April 9, with proceeds to benefit the War Veterans Home in Jennings.
A flag disposal ceremony was planned Friday, April 8, by a RV group at the Frog Festival pavilion. All were invited to attend.
With no additional business to come before the membership, the meeting was adjourned and a delicious meal was served by the Legion cooks.
