Barbara Matthews Spell

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rayne for Barbara Matthews Spell, 57, who died at 6:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014, at her home surrounded by her family.

Fr. Samuel Fontana will celebrate the Mass. Visitation began on Monday from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. and continues Tuesday from 8 a.m. until service time. The Rosary was prayed at 6 p.m. Monday.

Private graveside services will be held at a later date.

Barbara was born Nov. 3, 1957, in Crowley. She was a loving wife, mother, nana, mother-in-law and friend.

She was employed and managed Fezzo’s Restaurant in Crowley for 15-plus years. She loved being outdoors working in her garden or fishing. She was a professional seamstress and enjoyed making clothes for all her family. 

She is survived by her husband, Paul Spell of Crowley; her parents, Wilfred and Mary Matthews of Crowley; maternal grandfather, Clifton “T.B.” Owens of Rayne; daughter, Natacha Istre and husband Monty of Crowley; two sons, Joshua Spell of Crowley and Jeremy Spell and wife Elaine of Egan; five grandchildren, Gabrielle Istre, Payton Istre, Alanna Vondenstein, Alan Vondenstein Jr. and Alysse Vondenstein; a great-grandchild, Travis Cormier Jr; a sister, Beth M. Leger and husband Carl of Jennings; three brothers, Joe, Donald and John Matthews, all of Crowley; and her extended family at Fezzo’s.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Mable Abshire Matthews and Gabriel Matthews; and maternal grandparents, Eleanor “Lena” Owens and Lloyd “Tubby” Coles.
