Ernest Paul “Fungus” Fontenot

Ernest Paul “Fungus” Fontenot was born in Crowley on Nov. 9, 1939, to Thomas Fontenot and Josephine Monceaux Fontenot. He succumbed to a brain injury at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge at 3:25 p.m. on Friday, July 29, while surrounded by his family. Ernest worked as a tugboat captain for many years before retiring. He love to do carpentry work and play pool in his spare time, as well as boxing and socializing with family and friends on the weekends. Ernest was a very kind, fun and loving person, who was always there to help friends and family with projects or whatever else the needed him for. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Ernest is survived by his two sons, James Moss (Jerry) of Jennings and Ernest Paul Moss of Jennings; his two daughters, Vanessa Higdon (George) of Baton Rouge and Tori Joan Fontenot of Lafayette; his two brothers, Larry Fontenot (Carol) of Oklahoma and Eugene Fontenot of Leesville; his two sisters, Margaret Gatte of Gott’s Cove and Melba Ledoux of Crowley; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Ernest is now rejoicing in heaven with those who preceded him in death, his parents, Thomas and Josephine Fontenot; his beloved wife of 29 years, Darlene Fontenot; one grandson, Blaze Moss; and two sisters, Gloria Ertell and Sylvia Lee Moss.
Funeral services for Ernest Paul “Fungus” Fontenot, 76, of Iota will be held at Matthews and Son Funeral Home on Friday, Aug. 5, at 1 p.m. with Father Greg Gonzales officiating. Visitation will be held at Matthews & Son Funeral Home on Thursday, Aug. 4, from 4:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary being recited at 6 p.m. by Robert “Bob” Higdon. The family request the visitation resume on Friday, Aug. 4, at 9 a.m. until the time of his service. Ernest will be laid to rest in Sensat Cemetery in Egan.
