Helen Dacosta Kernan White

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, May 16, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church for Helen Dacosta Kernan White, who died at 12:32 a.m. Monday, May 12, 2014, at the Crowley American Legion Hospital.

Msgr. Russell Harrington will celebrate the Mass and the committal services will follow at the Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation may be observed on Thursday, May 15, from 3 p.m. until 10 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. until service time. The Rosary will be prayed at 6 p.m. Thursday and will be led by the Pink Ladies.

Mrs. Helen was born Jan. 2, 1923, in Memphis, Tennessee, to the late Augusta and Helen Webb Dacosta. She worked as a cook on the Chris Candies, a tugboat on which her husband Fred was the captain, and they traveled the world. She enjoyed visiting her sons in Washington State, San Francisco and Hawaii. She was a loving mother and enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Helen spent many hours working at the American Legion Hospital as a Pink Lady.

She is survived by three sons, Ken Kernan and wife Karen of Moses Lake, Washington, Frank Kernan and wife Ruth of San Francisco, California, and Don Kernan and wife Darlene of Crowley; four grandchildren, Julie Kernan Jones, Joni Kernan, Mike Kernan and Casey Sherwood; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Charles Bayard Kernan; second husband, Fred White; son, Charles “Bobby” Kernan Jr.; brother, Augusta Frank Dacosta; and a granddaughter, Rhonda Kernan.
