Raymond Nicholas Gossen

Mowata - A Mass of Christian Burial for Raymond Nicholas Gossen, 89, of Roberts Cove will be celebrated on Thursday, June 9, at 11 a.m. in St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Mowata.
Father Austin Leger will serve as celebrant. Interment, with military honors, will follow in St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation began Wednesday, June 8, from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. in Gossen Funeral Home in Rayne, with a rosary being recited at 7 p.m. Visitation continues on Thursday from 8 a.m. until 10:20 a.m. in the funeral home.
Mr. Gossen passed away on Monday, June 6, 2016, at 8:56 a.m. in his Roberts Cove residence.
A lifelong devoted Catholic, Mr. Gossen was a member of St. Leo IV Catholic Church, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society. As a member of The Greatest Generation, he served in the U.S. Navy in the closing days of World War II, attaining the rank of Seaman First Class. He was a member of American Legion Post 77 for over 60 years.
A farmer by trade, Mr. Gossen was a member of the Cattleman’s Association, The Rayne Riders Club, and was a founding member of Notre Dame High School Board of Athletics. He was well-known and well-loved throughout the region.
Survivors include his daughters, Sister Theresa Gossen, CDP, of San Antonio, Texas, Beverly Gossen Heikamp and husband Frank Sr. of Roberts Cove, Yvonne Gossen Guidry of Rayne, Dianne Gossen Istre and husband Winfred of Rayne, and Donna Gossen Hoffpauir and husband Greg of Basille; sons, Nicholas A. Gossen and wife Ann of Ebenezer, Gregory C. Gossen and wife Lisa of Rayne, and Byron J. Gossen of Roberts Cove; sisters, Lucille Gossen Reiners of Opelousas, Helen Gossen Arsement and husband Clarence of Rayne, and Catherine Gossen Cramer of Lawtell; brothers-in-law, William C. Puissegeur of Crowley, and Henry J. “Butch” Bollich Jr. and wife Cathy of Ragley; sister-in-law, Jeanne P. Gossen; 30 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Gossen in death were his wife of 66 years, Henrietta Theresa Victoria Habetz Gossen; parents, Nicholas Joseph “N.J.” Gossen and Marie Magdaline Bollich Gossen; granddaughter, Kate Louise Gossen; brother, Robert A. Gossen; sisters, Antoinette Puissegeur and Edna Plattsmier; and son-in-law, Michael John Guidry.
Serving as pallbearers are Byron J. Gossen, Gregory C. Gossen, Frank R. Heikamp Sr., Winfred J. Istre, Matthew J. Guidry, Greg Hoffpauir, Steve Didier, Tim Gossen, and Henry “Butch” Bollich Jr.
Named as honorary pallbearers are all of Mr. Gossen’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to the CNAs who care for Mr. Gossen, including Felicia Price, Melissa Nixon, Kaiasha Boudreaux, Dorian Stevenson, Jessica Boudreaux, and Chessoneka Carter.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Rayne Catholic Elementary, or to Notre Dame High School in Crowley.
