The Lady Wolves jumped out to an early lead on Church Point and captured a non-district 13-2 victory on Monday afternoon at Church Point to complete their regular season slate.
With the win, Rayne is looking towards a possible playoff spot. Brackets will be released today (Thursday) by the LHSAA.
In Monday’s win, six runs in the first three innings allowed the Lady Wolves to get in the driver’s seat where early and remain for the win.
A wild pitch, a steal of home by Brittany Broussard, and an RBI single by Madison Venable in the first inning, along with a two-run single by Savanna LaCombe during the second inning supplied the early offense for Lady Wolves to stay in control.
LaCombe went a perfect 1-1 at the plate for the Lady Wolves.
Madison Venable got the win for Lady Wolves thanks to nine strikeouts. Madison Venable allowed two earned runs on five hits and no walks over five innings.
Katlyn Higginbotham was charged with the Church Point loss allowing 13 runs in five innings, 13 walks and two strike outs.
Finishing up the Rayne hitting for the win were Jessie Carry (1-for-2, 3 RBIs), Savanna LaCombe (1-for-1, double, 2 RBIs, 2 runs), Madalyn Dupont (1-for-2, 2 runs), Brooke Moore (1-for-1, run), Madison Venable (1-for1, RBI), and Brittany Broussard (1-for-1, 3 runs).
In their last district contest last THursday, the Lady Wolves fell to top 10-ranked Crowley High, 17-8.
Even with Rayne batters slapping 11 hits on the day, it wasn’t enough to pullout a win.
Savanna LaCombe was hot from the plate for the Lady Wolves as she went 2-for-5, driving in one and scoring two runs. She homered in the second inning and singled in the fourth inning for a big day.
Even though Nella LaGrange allowed eight runs and 11 hits over seven innings, she still recorded the victory for Crowley.
Madison Venable took the loss for Rayne allowing 17 runs in six innings on 12 hits and a strike out.
The game was never in doubt after the first inning as Crowley scored nine runs on two, two-run homers and three singles.
A four-run second inning helped bring the Lady Wolves within five. A solo home run by LaCombe, a walk by Trinity Axtell, and a two-run single by Brooke Moore triggered what looked like a Lady Wolves’ comeback.
After pushing across three runs in the top of the third, Lady Wolves faced just a 11-7 deficit. An error, a steal of home by Kennedie Bourgeois, and an RBI single by Jessie Cary set off another Lady Wolves rally.
Crowley piled on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to basically file the win away. But Rayne was not about to quit.
One run in the top of the fifth helped the Lady Wolves close its deficit to 16-8. A walk by Moore fueled a possible Lady Wolves’ comeback. But, LaGrange got Broussard to strike out to end the inning and the Crowley win.
