Wolves dominate Beau Chene, 58-7

RAYNE - The Rayne High Wolves bounced back Friday night with a 58-7 district win over Beau Chene, adding an important win as the playoffs near.

“We needed this after the last couple weeks we had,” stated Rayne head coach Curt Ware following Friday’s win.

The Wolves fell to district foes during the last two weeks of play, last week to Crowley High in a close 52-48 barn-burner and the week before falling hard 23-11 to Eunice.

“This really got us pointed in the right direction and worked some things out -- we needed that as we look at the last regular game next week,” Ware continued.

With Friday’s win, a road win at Opelousas next week, and the wide-open district standings, the Wolves look at a chance at a share of the 4-4A district title, in addition to another run at the playoffs.

“We just need to keep everyone helthy and ready for play,” Ware concluded on Friday’s win.

The Beau Chene win came on the heels of 297 rushing yards by the Wolves, especially work-horse Trent Duhon who had 15 carries for 125 yards and four of Rayne’s eight touchdowns on the evening.

Despite the score, Beau Chene was the first to light up the scoreboard midway through the first quarter, a one-yard TD run by John Livings.

But, Rayne answered on their very next drive with Duhon’s first touchdown of the night, capping off an 81-yard drive. A fake extra point led to a Tyler LeJeune pass to Grant Menard for a two-point conversion and a, 8-7 Rayne lead to finish the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Menard recovered a fumble near midfield, placing the Wolves in good field position. On the first snap of the series, Duhon hit a seam up the middle for a 64-yard TD run. Ty Delahoussaye split the uprights for the extra point and a 15-8 Rayne lead. And then the Rayne scoring began to roll.

Mid-way through the second quarter, Jaquan Cormier ran in a 38-punt return for a Rayne score. The extra point saw the Wolves up 22-7.

With the first half winding down, Rayne quarterback Tyler LeJeune found Travon Fontenot for a 23-yard TD pass for another Rayne score. Delahoussaye added the extra point for a 29-7 Rayne lead at the halftime break.

Wrapping up a 61-yard scoring drive set up by a Byron Mouton reception and Javon Cormier run, Duhon crossed into the endzone for another score and a 36-7 Rayne lead as the third quarter began.

At this point, Rayne’s special teams showed promise.

With Rayne’s defense still standing firm midway through the third quarter, the Gators were forced to punt near midfield, where Brice Meche turned in a block that he recovered and ran in a 64-yard touchdown. LeJeune jogged in a two-point conversion to extend Rayne’s lead to 44-7.

Duhon finished his scoring late in the third quarter as he trotted in the endzone from 15 yards, increasing Rayne’s lead to 51-7.

TJ Bearb completed Rayne’s scoring on the night as he found the endzone from 24 yards out with a fourth quarter run. Delahoussaye’s extra point finsihed out the evening with a 58-7 eventual finale.

A productive defense in the final minutes, led by an interception by Tyrin Gordan and a fumble recovery by Tanner Meche, put the finishing touches for the Rayne win.

In addition to Duhon’s 125 rushing yards, Javon Cormier had 11 carries for 69 yards, Grant Menard was 2 for 55 yards, TJ Bearb 1-for-24 yards, DJ Stelly 2-for-15, Jaquan Cormier 14 yards on a carry, and Byron Mouton with two carries.

LeJeune was 4-for-7 on the night with 64 passing yards to Travon Fontenot, Byron Mouton, Grant Menard and Jaylen Reed.

Reed also finished up the last quarter at quarterback with one completion for 23 yards.

Christian Hodges led the Rayne defense with 7 tackles, followed closely by Donavon Cormier with 6, Desmond Cole and Chris Thomas each with 5, and four each by Devon Savoy, Grant Menard, Jonathan Dugas, Brice Meche and Jaquan Cormier.

The Wolves will travel to Opelousas on Friday to complete their district schedule. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
