RAYNE - In a marathon of a game Friday evening at Wolf Stadium capping off Homecoming Week, the Wolves of Rayne High collected over 600 offensive yards and lit up the scoreboard eight times for a 55-38 win over DeQuincy.
Despite the convincing win, Rayne High Head Coach Curt Ware seemed concerned.
“Not taking anything away from DeQuincy, we just can’t play another game like this,” stated Rayne High Coach Curt Ware following Friday’s win. “We have to do a lot better job of taking care of the ball.”
Ware’s observation pertains to the Wolves’ six turnovers during the contest.
“Don’t get me wrong,” Ware continued, “a win is a win -- it goes in the “W” column -- and our guys played well for the most part. But we still have some work to do.”
One change in Friday’s win was Rayne’s first score of the game, a long pass from Donald Doucet to Jaylon Reed for an 84-yard touchdown completion for a quick 6-0 lead on their very first drive.
The Wolves then executed a rushing drive for a short touchdown from running back Johnny Deculit. The extra point by Morgan Manuel saw Rayne up 13-0.
Following a off-side kickoff retained by the Wolves, Darien Harmon hit a seam for a 50-yard touchdown run, adding another Rayne score. Another Manuel extra point place the Wolves with a 20-0 lead before DeQuincy inched their way into the red zone.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard with a 21-yard touchdown run by Will Smith. The missed extra point put the score at 20-6 for the Wolves.
Rayne finished up the first quarter of play with another long touchdown run by Harmon, this one from 58 yards out. The extra point gave the Wolves a 27-6 lead entering the second quarter of play.
DeQuincy opened the second quarter with a short drive, compliments of Rayne turnover, giving the Tigers a scorig opportunity. Adrian Gates punch it in from two yards out for the TD score, followed by a two-point conversion by Will Smith for a 27-14 tally.
Trent Winbush and Darien Harmon pieced together a scoring drive for the Wolves on the heels of another Deculit score for a 34-14 Rayne lead.
DeQuincy planned to finish up the first half of play with a scoring drive of their own, but Rayne defender Tony Roberts pulled in an interception , setting up another Rayne score, one for the books.
Darien Harmon slipped up the middle of what looked like another score for Rayne, but the DeQuincy defense caused a fumble. However, Deculit made the recovery and recorded another Rayne touchdown. The extra point put the Wolves up 41-14 at the half.
DeQuincy opened the second half of play with two short scoring runs by Smith, but Rayne held onto a 41-26 lead,
Following another long touchdown run by Winbush, the 41-yard TD setup another Manuel extra point and extended Rayne’s lead, 48-26.
As Rayne’s second battalion filled in, DeQuincy was able to crossed into the endzone twice, but was answered with a Winbush TD run and the win.
Leading Rayne’s offense on the night were Trent Winbush (24 carries for 237 yards and 2 TD’s) and Darien Harmon (16 carries for 227 yards and 3 TD’s).
Filling out Rayne’s rushing card were Johnny Deculit (7 carries for 37 yards) and Jaylon Reed (1 carry for 10 yards before an injury).
For Rayne passing game, Donald Doucet recorded two completions for 92 yards including a touchdown pass. His lone receiver was Jaylon Reed with two completions for 92 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Tony Roberts and Cameron Gibson each nabbed an interception while adding four tackles and four solos for the Wolves.
Tackle stats for Rayne were led by Darian Richard with eight tackles, including four solos and eight assists. Tyreece Beverly recorded seven and half tackles of his own, along with six solos and three assists.
Zach Fontenot, who also had two returns for 22 yards, recorded six tackles.
Completing the Rayne defense were Carl Davis (3.5 tackles, QB Sack, TFL), Antonio Gabriel, Tavares Poullard, Johnny Deculit, Torin Benoit, Marlon Foreman, Jamian Evans and Donald Doucet.
“From now on during our season, there’s no way we will get away with what we did here tonight,” Ware concluded. “When you give up the yards and have this many turnovers, you just can’t do that and expect to win, especially from now on in our season.”
The Wolves will try to improve their impressive start to their season on Friday when they will host Eunice High. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Wolf Stadium.
