Crowley lands four 4-4A All-District first-team selections

CROWLEY – The Crowley Gents and the Rayne Wolves both experienced success on the playing field in 2014.
The Gents finished the regular season 8-2 and cruised to a second-place finish in league play with a 4-1 record; their only loss being at the hands of eventual champion LaGrange.
Rayne dropped two games in league play - one to Crowley and the other to LaGrange – and finished the regular season 8-2 as well.
Both teams earned home playoff games with the Gents falling in the first round to defending 4A champion East Jefferson and the Wolves making it the regional round before bowing out to Franklinton.
Their successes were reflective on the 4-4A All-District team announced recently, where the Gents and the Wolves were rewarded with nine first-team selections.
On the offensive side of the ball, two of the league’s top running backs reside in Acadia Parish - Crowley’s Ty’Von Griffin and Rayne’s Deontrey Wilridge.
Griffin finished his senior campaign with 1,688 yards rushing on 263 carries. He also led the parish in scoring with 27 touchdowns. In addition, he had nine receptions for 88 yards and two kickoff returns for 87 yards and a touchdown.
Wilridge also went for over 1,000 yards in the regular season, carrying 202 times for 1,240 yards and nine touchdowns while also hauling in nine passes for 122 yards and two more scores. The sophomore added six kickoff returns for 78 yards.
Joining Griffin and Wilridge as a first-team running back selection was LaGrange’s Markel Hawthorne, who rushed for 1,535 yards and 22 touchdowns on 152 carries. He also had 12 receptions for 198 yards and three touchdowns.
Those numbers were more than enough to earn Hawthorne the team’s Offensive MVP honor.
LaGrange’s Jerimiah West was tabbed as the first-team quarterback after throwing for 1,282 yards and 20 touchdowns.
The wideouts are Crowley High’s Jacq’Co Price and LaGrange’s Dondel Lewis.
Price had 28 receptions for 453 yards and four touchdowns. The junior also made the team as the return specialist after returning 17 kickoffs for 426 yards and a touchdown.
Price was also a first-team selection at defensive back.
The tight end on this year’s team is Crowley High’s John Marceaux, who hauled in 15 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns.
Crowley’s Marshall Wilbert and Rayne’s Nick Dore and Grant Abshire made the team on the offensive line. They were joined by LaGrange’s Keydrick Guillory and Wilson LeMelle and Washington Marion’s Lance Southern.
Beau Chene’s Cole Cormier nailed down both the kicking and punting positions on the first unit. Defensively, the Gents landed two players - JaJuan Delco and Price.
Delco, the team’s defensive MVP, grabbed first-team honors on the defensive line after recording 33 tackles (28 for a loss), six sacks, four forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
Rayne’s Desmond Cole also made the team on the defensive line after recording 44 tackles and four sacks.
Joining Delco and Cole on the line were LaGrange’s Dante Davis and Kenneth Joubert.
The linebackers are LaGrange’s Tralen Anderson, Mike LeDay and James Guillory and Eunice’s Ajyh Johnson.
Price had 15 tackles at defensive back as well as nine pass breakups. Also earning spots at defensive back are LaGrange’s Vincent Wilson and Alvinoski LaFluer and Eunice’s Travis Godfrey.
The Gents also nailed down four spots on the offensive second team in the persons of quarterback Pate Broussard and wide receiver Terrell Thomas. In addition, Andrew Simon earned a spot at both kicker and punter.
Broussard had one of the best seasons at quarterback in recent memory for the Gents. He completed 100 passes for 1,419 yards and 12 touchdowns while rushing for 164 yards and one touchdown.
Thomas was the Gents second-leading receiver with 29 receptions for 393 yards and three touchdowns despite missing three games due to injury.
The other receiving spot went to Eunice’s Travis Godfrey.
Rayne’s John Michael Besse made the second team at running back after posting 1,089 yards and 15 touchdowns on 127 carries. He also had 27 receptions for 338 yards and four more touchdowns.
The other running backs on the second unit are Eunice’s Ty Ceasar and Washington Marion’s Jacobi Taylor.
Crowley’s Christian Breaux made the second team on the offensive line along with Rayne’s Hunter Adkins, Eunice’s Troy Rideau and Alex Sonnier and Cole Prudhomme and Washington Marion’s Terek Warren.
The second-team tight end is LaGrange’s Devan Jack.
Simon averaged 38.7 yards per punt for the Gents and connected on 6-of-8 field goals with the longest being from 34 yards.
Defensively, Crowley’s Edward Yokum made the second-team at linebacker and John Marceaux made it at defensive back.
Yokum recorded 42 tackles, eight for a loss, two sacks, two fumble recoveries and one interception. Marceaux had 63 tackles, three for a loss, one sack, six pass breakups and one interception.
Rayne’s Donovan Cormier earned a spot on the defensive line and Hunter Keely got on at defensive back.
